Photographing Whiskey the Cat
A couple years ago, I had the chance to photograph Chion Wolf and her dog, Gray. It was one of those sessions that stays with you — thoughtful, full of personality, and deeply rooted in connection. So I was so excited to work with Chion again and this time, with her cat, Whiskey!
This session took place in my West Hartford studio. Whiskey arrived curious and a little cautious, making her way around the space slowly, inspecting everything. I always allow time for animals to settle in — it’s part of the process. Once she felt safe, we brought out the tuna, and just like that she was an absolute pro!
We photographed her on a clean white backdrop, which gave us a beautiful canvas to work with. The final images are a blend of expressive and refined — some light and a little playful, others more serious and still. Afterwards, I experimented with changing the background color in post — something new I’ve been testing — and it gave us some really beautiful options.
What struck me most during this session was the connection between Chion and Whiskey. As she talked about what Whiskey means to her, it was clear this wasn’t just a photo shoot. It was about honoring that bond. When Chion saw the final portraits, her reaction said everything. She told me we captured Whiskey exactly. That’s the goal every time — to create something that feels honest, personal, and lasting.
If you’ve only seen my work with dogs, you’re not alone. Most people assume that’s all I do. But the truth is — cats belong in front of the camera too. They’re expressive, soulful, and yes, sometimes unpredictable — which only makes the final images more rewarding.
If you have a cat who means the world to you, I’d love to create something for you, too.
